چکیده

Pragmatic theories and computational models of reference must account for people's frequent use redundant color adjectives (e.g., referring to a single triangle as the blue triangle). The standard pragmatic view holds that informativity referential expression depends on contrast: Color should be used contrast competitors same kind preempt an ambiguity between several triangles different colors), otherwise they are redundant. Here we propose alternative view, incremental efficiency hypothesis, according which calculated incrementally over entire visual context. This is first theoretical sensitive incrementality language processing, making cross-linguistic predictions depending word order. Experiment 1 confirmed English speakers produced more triangle) than Spanish el triangulo azul), but both groups in denser displays where it would efficient. In Experiments 2A 2B, eye tracking show not processing constraint. Instead, determine listeners establish across categories (BLUE SHAPES > TRIANGULAR ONE), whereas within category (TRIANGLES BLUE ONE). listeners, however, reversed their search strategy when tested immediately after. Our results languages exploit order increase communicative efficiency. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Listeners representations of within-word structure: a cross-linguistic and cross-dialectal investigation

Japanese, British English and American English listeners were presented with spoken words in their native language, and asked to mark on a written transcript of each word the first natural division point in the word. The results showed clear and strong patterns of consensus, indicating that listeners have available to them conscious representations of within-word structure. Orthography did not ...

Word frequency cues word order in adults: cross-linguistic evidence

One universal feature of human languages is the division between grammatical functors and content words. From a learnability point of view, functors might provide entry points or anchors into the syntactic structure of utterances due to their high frequency. Despite its potentially universal scope, this hypothesis has not yet been tested on typologically different languages and on populations o...

Communicative efficiency and syntactic predictability: A cross- linguistic study based on the Universal Dependencies corpora

There is ample evidence that human communication is organized efficiently: more predictable information is usually encoded by shorter linguistic forms and less predictable information is represented by longer forms. The present study, which is based on the Universal Dependencies corpora, investigates if the length of words can be predicted from the average syntactic information content, which i...

Cross-linguistic Perception of Intonation by Mandarin and Cantonese Listeners

The question intonation patterns of Mandarin and Cantonese are distinctive. While Mandarin relies on the global F0 contour, Cantonese depends on a boundary tone. A crosslinguistic perception test was conducted with Mandarin and Cantonese listeners to investigate their use of pitch in identifying intonation patterns in familiar and unfamiliar languages. Forced identification tasks were used. The...
